New seminar: Numerical methods for the space-time approximation of a differential problem for salts crystallization

di credico

Giulia Di Credico (Università di Parma) presenta un seminario sui metodi per il degrado di mattoni di epoca romana sottoposti all'esposizione ai sali, uno dei risultati del progetto PRIN-PNRR MATHPROCULT.

Abstract:

We study a space-time differential model related to the degradation of stone artifacts caused by exposure to air and atmospheric agents, which specifically lead to the accumulation of salt crystals in the materials. The model problem is solved in a space finite-element (FEM) perspective within a marching on in time procedure, extending the results related to 1D simulations already set up in [1] by a space-time discretization with finite differences. These, enriched by a sensitivity analysis with respect to the variation of some model parameters, furnish in particular a benchmark framework for the new FEM reformulation, developed to address the need for more realistic simulations in higher spatial dimensions.Considerations about stability and numerical convergence will be performed and numerical results will be developed thanks to an efficient code implementation realized in FEniCS environment.
