Experimental and computational investigation of the group 11-group 2 diatomic molecules: First determination of the AuSr and AuBa bond energies and thermodynamic stability of the copper- and silver-alkaline earth species

The dissociation energies of the intermetallic molecules AuSr and AuBa were for the first time determined by the Knudsen effusion mass spectrometry method. The two species were produced in the vapor phase equilibrated with apt mixtures of the constituent elements, and the dissociation equilibria were monitored mass-spectrometrically in the temperature range 1406-1971 K (AuSr) and 1505-1971 K (AuBa).

Dynamics and rheology of cells and vesicles in shear flow

A deep understanding of the dynamics and rheology of suspensions of vesicles, cells, and capsules is relevant for different applications, ranging from soft glasses to blood flow [1]. I will present the study of suspensions of fluid vesicles by a combination of molecular dynamics and mesoscale hydrodynamics simulations (multi-particle collision dynamics) in two dimensions [2], pointing out the big potential of the numerical method to address problems in soft matter.

Ultrasensitive HCV RNA Quantification in Antiviral Triple Therapy: New Insight on Viral Clearance Dynamics and Treatment Outcome Predictors.

Objectives Identifying the predictive factors of Sustained Virological Response (SVR) represents an important challenge in new interferon-based DAA therapies. Here, we analyzed the kinetics of antiviral response associated with a triple drug regimen, and the association between negative residual viral load at different time points during treatment. Methods Twenty-three HCV genotype 1 (GT 1a n = 11; GT1b n = 12) infected patients were included in the study.

A numerical algorithm for the assessment of the conjecture of a subglacial lake tested at Amundsenisen, Svalbard

The melting of glaciers coming with climate change threatens the heritage of the last glaciation of Europe likely contained in subglacial lakes in Greenland and Svalbard. This aspect urges specialists to focus their studies (theoretical, numerical, and on-field) on such fascinating objects. Along this line, we have approached the validation of the conjecture of the existence of a subglacial lake beneath the Amundsenisen Plateau at South-Spitzbergen, Svalbard, where ground penetrating radar measurements have revealed several flat signal spots, the sign of the presence of a body of water.

Assessment of MIPAS ESA V7 products and first verification of MIPAS ESA V8 products

MIPAS on ENVISAT performed almost continuous measurements of atmospheric composition for approximately 10 years, from June 2002 to April 2012. ESA processor, based on the algorithm ORM (Optimized Retrieval Model), originally designed for the Near Real Time analysis and developed by an European Consortium led by IFAC, is currently used for the reanalysis of the full MIPAS mission. The maintenance and the upgrade of the ESA processor are made in the frame of the Quality Working Group, where a fruitful collaboration among Level 1, Level 2 and validation teams can be exploited.

Matematica & Ambiente.

Tuning of level-set speed function for speckled image segmentation

The segmentation of speckled images, as the synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images, is usually recognized as a very complex problem, because of the speckle, multiplicative noise, which produces granular images. In segmentation problems, based on level set method, the evolution of the curve is determined by a speed function, which is fundamental to achieve a good segmentation. In this paper we propose a study of the new speed function obtained by the linear combination of image average intensity and image gradient speed functions.

Use of an Advanced SAR Monitoring Technique to Monitor Old Embankment Dams

The work mainly discusses the use of the Ground-Based Synthetic Aperture Radar (GBSAR) interferometry technique to observe and control the behavior of earthfill or rockfill embankments for dam impoundments. This non-invasive technique provides overall displacements patterns measured with a sub-millimeter accuracy. The need of reliable monitoring of old embankment dams is rapidly increasing since a large number of these structures are still equipped with old monitoring devices, usually installed some decades ago, which can give only information on localized areas of the embankment.
