Classification of Particle Numbers with Unique Heitmann-Radin Minimizer

We show that minimizers of the Heitmann-Radin energy (Heitmann and Radin in J Stat Phys 22(3): 281-287, 1980) are unique if and only if the particle number N belongs to an infinite sequence whose first thirty-five elements are 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 19, 21, 24, 27, 30, 33, 37, 40, 44, 48, 52, 56, 61, 65, 70, 75, 80, 85, 91, 96, 102, 108, 114, 120 (see the paper for a closed-form description of this sequence).

Rheology of active emulsions with negative effective viscosity

We numerically study by lattice Boltzmann simulations the rheological properties of an active emulsion made of a suspension of an active polar gel embedded in an isotropic passive background. We find that the hexatic equilibrium configuration of polar droplets is highly sensitive to both active injection and external forcing and may either lead to asymmetric unidirectional states which break top-bottom symmetry or symmetric ones. In this latter case, for large enough activity, the system develops a shear thickening regime at low shear rates.

TLS and GB-RAR Measurements of Vibration Frequencies and Oscillation Amplitudes of Tall Structures: An Application to Wind Towers

This article presents a methodology for the monitoring of tall structures based on the joint use of a terrestrial laser scanner (TLS), configured in line scanner mode, and a ground-based real aperture radar (GB-RAR) interferometer. The methodology provides both natural frequencies and oscillation amplitudes of tall structures. Acquisitions of the surface of the tall structure are performed by the TLS with a high sampling rate: each line scan provides an instantaneous longitudinal section.

Trends of soil organic carbon (SOC) are significant indicators for land and soil degradation. Decrease in SOC compromises the efforts to achieve by 2030, a land degradation neutral world, as required by Target 15.3 of the Seventeen Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) adopted by United Nations in September 2015.

Single cell multi-omic analysis identifies a Tbx1-dependent multilineage primed population in murine cardiopharyngeal mesoderm.

The poles of the heart and branchiomeric muscles of the face and neck are formed from the cardiopharyngeal mesoderm within the pharyngeal apparatus. They are disrupted in patients with 22q11.2 deletion syndrome, due to haploinsufficiency of TBX1, encoding a T-box transcription factor. Here, using single cell RNA-sequencing, we now identify a multilineage primed population within the cardiopharyngeal mesoderm, marked by Tbx1, which has bipotent properties to form cardiac and branchiomeric muscle cells.

Low energy configurations of topological singularities in two dimensions: A Gamma-convergence analysis of dipoles

This paper deals with the variational analysis of topological singularities in two dimensions. We consider two canonical zero-temperature models: the core radius approach and the Ginzburg-Landau energy. Denoting by epsilon the length scale parameter in such models, we focus on the vertical bar log epsilon VERBAR; energy regime.

A geroscience approach for Parkinson's disease: Conceptual framework and design of PROPAG-AGEING project

Advanced age is the major risk factor for idiopathic Parkinson's disease (PD), but to date the biological relationship between PD and ageing remains elusive. Here we describe the rationale and the design of the H2020 funded project "PROPAG-AGEING", whose aim is to characterize the contribution of the ageing process to PD development. We summarize current evidences that support the existence of a continuum between ageing and PD and justify the use of a Geroscience approach to study PD.

Fractional Orlicz-Sobolev spaces

The optimal Orlicz target space and the optimal rearrangement-invariant tar- get space are exhibited for embeddings of fractional-order Orlicz-Sobolev spaces W^{s,A}(R^n). Related Hardy type inequalities are proposed as well. Versions for frac- tional Orlicz-Sobolev seminorms of the Bourgain-Brezis-Mironescu theorem on the limit as s->1^- and of the Maz'ya-Shaposhnikova theorem on the limit as s ->0^+ are established. This is a joint work with Andrea Cianchi, Lubos Pick and Lenka Slavikova.

Passive Bistatic Ground-Based Synthetic Aperture Radar: Concept, System, and Experiment Results

A passive bistatic ground-based synthetic aperture radar (PB-GB-SAR) system without a dedicated transmitter has been developed by using commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) hardware for local-area high-resolution imaging and displacement measurement purposes. Different from the frequency-modulated or frequency-stepped continuous wave signal commonly used by GB-SAR, the continuous digital TV signal broadcast by a geostationary satellite has been adopted by PB-GB-SAR.
