Modeling realistic multiphase flows using a non-orthogonal multiple-relaxation-time lattice Boltzmann method

In this paper, we develop a three-dimensional multiple-relaxation-time lattice Boltzmann method (MRT-LBM) based on a set of non-orthogonal basis vectors. Compared with the classical MRT-LBM based on a set of orthogonal basis vectors, the present non-orthogonal MRT-LBM simplifies the transformation between the discrete velocity space and the moment space and exhibits better portability across different lattices.

Benchmarking multi-GPU applications on modern multi-GPU integrated systems

GPUs are very powerful computing accelerators that are often employed in single-device configuration. However, there is a steadily growing interest in using multiple GPUs in a concurrent way both to overcome the memory limitations of the single device and to further reduce execution times. Until recently, communication among GPUs had been carried out mainly by using networking technologies originally devised for standard CPUs with the CPU playing an active role in the communication.

Effects of Advective-Diffusive Transport of Multiple Chemoattractants on Motility of Engineered Chemosensory Particles in Fluidic Environments

Motility behavior of an engineered chemosensory particle (ECP) in fluidic environments is driven by its responses to chemical stimuli. One of the challenges to understanding such behaviors lies in tracking changes in chemical signal gradients of chemoattractants and ECP-fluid dynamics as the fluid is continuously disturbed by ECP motion. To address this challenge, we introduce a new multiscale numerical model to simulate chemotactic swimming of an ECP in confined fluidic environments by accounting for motility-induced disturbances in spatiotemporal chemoattractant distributions.

Lattice Boltzmann method for thin-liquid-film hydrodynamics

We propose an approach to the numerical simulation of thin-film flows based on the lattice Boltzmann method. We outline the basic features of the method, show in which limits the expected thin-film equations are recovered, and perform validation tests. The numerical scheme is applied to the viscous Rayleigh-Taylor instability of a thin film and to the spreading of a sessile drop toward its equilibrium contact angle configuration. We show that the Cox-Voinov law is satisfied and that the effect of a tunable slip length on the substrate is correctly captured.

Biomimetic Nanotherapies: Red Blood Cell Based Core-Shell Structured Nanocomplexes for Atherosclerosis Management

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of mortality worldwide. Atherosclerosis, one of the most common forms of the disease, is characterized by a gradual formation of atherosclerotic plaque, hardening, and narrowing of the arteries. Nanomaterials can serve as powerful delivery platforms for atherosclerosis treatment. However, their therapeutic efficacy is substantially limited in vivo due to nonspecific clearance by the mononuclear phagocytic system.

Evaluation of NOx emissions and ozone production due to vehicular traffic via second-order models

The societal impact of traffic is a long-standing and complex problem. We focus on the estimation of ground-level ozone production due to vehicular traffic. We propose a comprehensive computational approach combining four consecutive modules: a traffic simulation module, an emission module, a module for the main chemical reactions leading to ozone production, and a module for the diffusion of gases in the atmosphere. The traffic module is based on a second-order traffic flow model, obtained by choosing a special velocity function for the Collapsed Generalized Aw-Rascle-Zhang model.

A dominance test for measuring financial connectedness

This paper introduces a dominance test that allows to determine whether or not a financial institution can be classified as being more systemically important than another in a multivariate framework. The dominance test relies on a new risk measure, the NetCoVaR that is specifically tailored to capture the joint extreme co-movements between institutions belonging to a network. The asymptotic theory for the statistical test is provided under mild regularity conditions concerning the joint distribution of asset returns which is assumed to be elliptically contoured.

Long-time behaviour of the approximate solution to quasi-convolution Volterra equations

The integral representation of some biological phenomena consists in Volterra equations whose kernels involve a convolution term plus a non convolution one. Some significative applications arise in linearised models of cell migration and collective motion, as described in Di Costanzo et al. (Discrete Contin. Dyn. Syst. Ser. B 25 (2020) 443-472), Etchegaray et al. (Integral Methods in Science and Engineering (2015)), Grec et al. (J. Theor. Biol. 452 (2018) 35-46) where the asymptotic behaviour of the analytical solution has been extensively investigated.

Network-Aware Evaluation Environment for Reputation Systems

Parties of reputation systems rate each other and use ratings to compute reputation scores that drive their interactions. When deciding which reputation model to deploy in a network environment, it is important to find the most suitable model and to determine its right initial configuration. This calls for an engineering approach for describing, implementing and evaluating reputation systems while taking into account specific aspects of both the reputation systems and the networked environment where they will run.

Traffic Data: Exploratory Data Analysis with Apache Accumulo

The amount of traffic data collected by automatic number plate reading systems constantly incrseases. It is therefore important, for law enforcement agencies, to find convenient techniques and tools to analyze such data. In this paper we propose a scalable and fully automated procedure leveraging the Apache Accumulo technology that allows an effective importing and processing of traffic data. We discuss preliminary results obtained by using our application for the analysis of a dataset containing real traffic data provided by the Italian National Police.
