Motility-induced phase separation and coarsening in active matter

Active systems, or active matter, are self-driven systems that live, or function, far from equilibrium - a paradigmatic example that we focus on here is provided by a suspension of self-motile particles. Active systems are far from equilibrium because their microscopic constituents constantly consume energy from the environment in order to do work, for instance to propel themselves. The non-equilibrium nature of active matter leads to a variety of non-trivial intriguing phenomena.

Active Model H: Scalar Active Matter in a Momentum-Conserving Fluid

We present a continuum theory of self-propelled particles, without alignment interactions, in a momentum-conserving solvent. To address phase separation, we introduce a dimensionless scalar concentration field ? with advective-diffusive dynamics. Activity creates a contribution ? to the deviatoric stress, where is odd under time reversal and d is the number of spatial dimensions; this causes an effective interfacial tension contribution that is negative for contractile swimmers.

Final MIPAS L1 and L2 V8 full mission reprocessing, lessons learnt and possible further improvements

MIPAS is a Fourier Transform spectrometer that measured the atmospheric limb emission spectra in the middle infrared on board the ENVISAT satellite. These measurements allowed the global monitoring of the three-dimensional (latitude, longitude and altitude) distribution of temperature and of the concentrations of many species, during both day and night, for 10 years, from July 2002 to April 2012. MIPAS measurements allowed to study the atmosphere from the upper troposphere to the stratosphere and above, up to the thermosphere.

ENIGMA: modelling of Boulder Clay Glacier (Northern Foothills) and initiation of biological and biogeochemical studies of its glacial lakes

The Boulder Clay (BC) glacier and the surrounding area, partially covered by rock, ice and moraines, are considered by structure and morphology suitable to host a helicopter runway that would support the work efficiency of "Mario Zucchelli" Station and other international operational bases nearby. Actually the quasi-imperceptible slope of the bottom and the rocky containment walls make that area stable and easy to be converted.
